North Wales Choral Festival 2009

November 7th 2009

Llandudno took centre stage on Saturday, November 7th as 19 choirs from across the UK and Ireland competed for the 2009 winners’ trophy and prize fund.

The competition kicked off at 10am in Venue Cymru’s arena starting with the dedicated youth section. It was a tough adjudication process, but Côr Ieuenctid Môn won out in the end and went on to represent that section at the evening winners’ concert.

Next up to sing was the colourful mixed section, bringing with it a smashing performance of Laudate securing its choir; Friday Voices first prize, £500 and their well earned place in the evening concert.

After lunch it was the turn of the ladies, the toughest section of the competition with 9 choirs competing. There could only be one winner however and after an extended deliberation with the judges, the ladies from Friday Voices were through.

For the last and most anticipated section, late afternoon saw the turn of the powerful male voice choirs. They battled it out with performances like When the Saints Go Marching In and African Trilogy, but in the end it was Shifnal & District Male Voice Choir who went on to represent their section at the evening concert.

As 8 o’ clock approached hundreds of ticket holders swapped the X Factor and attended the evening winners’ concert to hear who would be crowned the overall 2009 winner.

Four nervous choirs waited stage side to sing their crème de la crème performances in hopes of reigning supreme. While the judges adjudicated there was a special guest performance from Cân I Gymru (Song for Wales) winner Elfed Morgan Morris who wowed the crowd with his version of Gofidiau (Sorrows).

The compere for the evening, S4C’s Dilwyn Morgan, read aloud the results to reveal Friday Voices Mixed Choir as the day’s winner. They received an additional £500, the much desired overall winner’s trophy and the respect and raucous applause of all in attendance.

If you missed this year’s concert and are interested in entering a choir or joining the audience for 2010 then make Saturday November 6th a date for your diary.
